Stamp duty row forces Angela Rayner to quit top roles: what went wrong

A £40,000 stamp duty shortfall on an £800,000 Hove flat has pushed Angela Rayner out of three senior roles. The mix-up stems from complex rules on trusts and minors that treated her new flat as a second home. She referred herself to the ministerial standards adviser and resigned on September 5, 2025. HMRC has been notified and will recover the underpayment with interest and any penalties.
